Texas is converting to an online insurance verification form in which the cops basically ignore the insurance card and see if the registration shows up as being insured in the online database. The insurance card system doesn't really prove the driver has insurance if he bought the insurance, cancelled, or let the insurance lapse, but kept the card. The online insurance verification system has a big loophole, in that a person with a good driving record can get cheap! insurance and turn around and let a DUI borrow the car, and n! ot be listed on the insurance policy. If she was handing you the rental car companies business card, she more than likely had their coverage when she rented the car. They will not let it leave the lot without insurance being on it. Either your own personal policy has to cover rental car usage, your credit card company has to cover it, when you pay for renting the car, or the rental car company gives you the insurance and tacs it to the bill.
