Catheryn Barringer: There's resolution and then there's compression.Resolution is a function of the sensor, and it's a measure of how many photosites are located on the sensor. You'll see this expressed in megapixels or mp.Typical resolutions these days include 8 megapixels, 10 megapixels and 12 megapixels for point and shoot cameras.For SLRs, typical resolutions include 6mp, 10pm and 12mp.Compression is different. That's a function of the image file and how compressed the file is to save storage space. Typically, a camera will have 3 levels of compression: Basic (most compressed), Normal (medium compression), and a high quality level like Fine (least compressed and highest quality).
