Marcia Cheathan: He Who Must Not Be Named had a dog? You actually needed to use the possessive apostrophe no matter if What was his name or not as the word name is the direct object belonging to the dog either way. The only question is if What was his name or if someone was asking what the name was. Sadly, in writing, the use an interrogative mark automatically makes it a question whereas if you were telling it verbally, there is no way to distinguish a query from a statment which happens to start with an interrogative word used in a different manner than normal, which is what makes the pun work. I therefore submit that perhaps you were not announcing a riddle, but telling us the name of the man who entered the lift. Thus:Riddle, a man, got into a lift with his dog. What was his dog's name. Since the only Riddle I know is Tom Riddle, he evidently has a dog we didn't know about....Show more
